Hi, I’m Katherine Burgess—Kata, if you like. From my perch in the ancient mountains of Roanoke, I chase the kind of magic that flickers by unnoticed: moments wild enough to feel untamed. That’s the heart of my photography—not stiff smiles, but real, feral flashes of life.

Before Roanoke, I wandered through states ranging from Florida to the Pacific Northwest, learning, observing, and soaking in everything along the way. I worked in the mountains of West Virginia, tracking snowshoe hares like a quiet shadow in the woods. That nomadic spirit has woven its way into my approach to life and photography—finding the beauty and chaos in places most overlook, and turning it into something extraordinary.

At home, I live in a joyful little circus: my endlessly patient husband, a dog who thinks he’s king, a cat who actually is, and our baby—the tiniest, greatest masterpiece, who arrived with all the grace of a falling star and the quiet wisdom that the universe might actually be a little mischievous and magnificent.

My love for art has been as inevitable as gravity. An insatiable hunger to capture light, emotion, and the secret language of in-between moments. I believe in chasing golden hour like a starry-eyed fool, in laughter that makes your ribs ache, and in photos that make your heart do that fluttery thing. If you’re looking for photos with soul—let’s make something beautiful together.
